About Orthodoxy

Orthodoxy means right belief or right doctrine. But how can you know if your beliefs are right or true? The Eastern Orthodox Church traces its family heritage all the way back to the Apostles—and like all good families, certain things were meticulously passed down throughout the ages. You can think of it like a grandmother passing her special bread recipe on to her grandchildren.

Orthodox Worship is Physical

When you walk into an Eastern Orthodox worship service for the first time, you may be surprised to find how physical it is. Lining the walls and ceilings are pictures (called icons) of Christ and the saints; there are people are walking in, lighting candles, crossing themselves, and bowing; the priest is walking around swinging a bowl of hot coals and incense; the movement never really stops, as the entire service moves towards its climax. And the peak of Orthodox Worship is another physical act: Holy Communion, the taking in Christ. At first blush, it can all seem overwhelming, confusing, and even terrifying—not to mention foreign. But if you hang in the service long enough, you may find that through the physicality of Orthodox worship, the spiritual eyes of your heart are beginning to open.
